CORONAVIRUS - UPDATE 27TH MARCH 2020
We are continuing to recruit for September 2020 in conjunction with Brighton and Sussex universities.
Some schools have closed all of their places and all SALARIED places have closed, but there are still tuition places open in some schools.
The best way to establish who is taking applications is to look on Find HERE or email firstname.lastname@example.org with an enquiry.
All applications must still be made via UCAS; the universities will still interview first remotely, followed by a remote school-based interview.

General School Direct Information
There are eligibility requirements for Teacher Training and applicants will need to check the Eligibility Rules carefully.
Basic requirements are:
- A good UK undergraduate honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification.
- A GCSE grade C or above in English and mathematics.
- Additionally, a GCSE grade C or above in a science if you are applying to teach primary or key stage 2/3 (ages 7–14).
‘Equivalent’ qualifications will not be accepted – the applicant must have a degree. If the degree was taken in another country applicants would need to go to the National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) website to find out if qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree.
Applicants need to have a strong knowledge of the subject they wish to teach.
The Two School Direct routes
In order to help tailor training to your skills and experience, there are two separate School Direct training options. These are Tuition (also called non-salaried) and Salaried.
School Direct Tuition route
You could be eligible for a tax-free bursary of up to £26,000, depending on the subject you want to teach and the degree class that you hold.
In order to encourage the best people to enter the profession, if you are applying for initial teacher training (ITT) courses, you will need at least a 2:2 degree to be eligible for a training bursary.
School Direct Salaried route
Any applicant who wishes to apply for this route must have had three years’ work experience after graduation. This does not need to be in an educational setting. As with both of the School Direct routes, candidates will be expected to demonstrate an ability to relate well to children, but the salaried placement applicants will need to show that they can work independently as this will be essential for the training route which will be predominantly classroom-based.
You will be paid a salary by the school in which you train. This salary will be in line with the unqualified teacher pay scale. You will not need to pay fees to cover the cost of your qualified teacher status (QTS) award - this is paid by your school. You will not be eligible for a training bursary.
The salary is in the region of £17,340, but you will be taxed and NI-ed on this.

In essence, it boils down to three basic facts:
- On the Tuition route, the trainee pays the university £9250K for their training year. This can be financed by a government loan from Student Finance.
- On the Salaried route, the trainee is not liable for any fees, but is paid a salary between £16,00-£21,000 depending where the school is based. The school must pay the university a fee for the time their trainee spends at university. Some subjects
- There are scholarships (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Computing) and bursaries available for both routes, but these are dependant on the degree class and the subject. Look for the table entitled training Bursaries to find relevant information for you.
Please note that the TDA
commissioned a grade comparison exercise, carried out by UK NARIC, of all international awards that are considered comparable to British Bachelor (honours) degree standard. Applicants with a degree from outside the UK should refer to the equivalency table (PDF, 1MB)
to see if their degree is likely to attract a bursary, or should consult their chosen training provider.
Advice about writing a personal statement
What is a personal statement?
It is your opportunity to stand out from all other applicants. It is important that you convey why you want to teach, what you can offer, and why you will make a good teacher. You will need to explain how you know that teaching is right for you, and in what way the school-based experience you have had confirms this.
What should I demonstrate in my personal statement?
- A strong commitment to becoming a teacher
- Be enthusiastic about your subject and show that you want to share this enthusiasm with pupils
- Identify specific reasons for wanting to become a teacher
- Demonstrate a desire to work with young people
A good understanding of what life as a teacher is really like
- Recent experience of a secondary or primary school as appropriate, including observing lessons, ideally in the subject area you wish to teach.
- Ability to analyse the teaching you have observed and describe what you have gained from the experience.
- Understanding of what life as a teacher is really like
- Understanding of the skills needed to be a teacher and work with young people
Appropriate personal qualities and values, for example:
- Ability to work and interact with others
- Ability to think on your feet
- Good communication skills
How should I structure my personal statement?
- Why teaching and why you?
- Relevance of and reflections upon your school-based work experience
- Why your chosen subject?
- Any additional factors in support of your application
