The Millais Alliance

Millais became one of the first 100 schools in England to be granted Teaching School status in July 2011 – a new designation entitling us to take a lead role in school-centred training and the professional development of staff. We were proud to be successfully re-designated in July 2015.

We are at the centre of an Alliance of schools, working with other partners including primary, secondary, special schools and universities to deliver high quality support for teachers and further improve standards. 

To be awarded Teaching School status in July 2011 was a tremendous accolade for our school and our partners; it demonstrates the high standards our partnership of schools has achieved in teaching and learning. We are committed to further enhancing the professional development of staff in all Alliance schools and becoming a hub of excellence in training new teachers to the profession, providing school to school support and continuous professional and leadership development. Being at the forefront of these exciting initiatives supports our vision of being an innovative school. Our objectives remain the same for 2015 onwards.

Millais School – background information

Millais is an 11–16 girls comprehensive school situated on the east side of Horsham, West Sussex. It has been a specialist Language College for 16 years and consequently has a strong international ethos. In more recent years, Millais was awarded an additional specialism as a Training School; this enabled the school to develop our work with HEI’s on the delivery of ITT and provided a platform for sharing expertise in CPD. Millais is recognised as being a school with high quality CPD as they have been awarded the Gold Quality Mark for CPD leadership.

Leadership is a strength at Millais School both at senior and middle leadership level and was graded as Outstanding in the last OfSTED report. The examination results for Millais have improved significantly over the last few years as a result of the focus on the quality of Teaching and Learning. Five staff from Millais School have become SLE’s. Three members of staff underwent the ‘Outstanding Facilitator Programme’ training and delivered the Improving Teaching Programme (ITP) and the Outstanding Teaching Programme (OTP) to other teachers in the locality. They have successfully delivered the Outstanding Ways to Learn programme, although this is taking a break in 2015-16.

Leon Nettley retired as Head in July 2015. He had been Headteacher of Millais for the past 15 years and has taken the school from Good to Outstanding. Our most recent Ofsted inspection in May 2014 resulted in a second Outstanding grade. 

Our new Head, Dr Alison Lodwick, joined us in September 2015 and remains committed to the collaborative work of the Alliance and its agendas going forwards.

Strategic Partners

Millais School currently works with eleven dynamic and enthusiastic Strategic Partners who are involved in the delivery of the Teaching School agenda. These Strategic Partners each have something to offer in driving this agenda forwards and in supporting the wider group of schools called the ‘Alliance’. The aim is to grow the number of Alliance schools, making it as inclusive as possible in the future. Currently, the Alliance is defined as a group of local schools who work closely and benefit from aspects of The Millais Alliance partnership work.
